Your outfit sounds cool, go for it
I recently bought a brown Reiss suit via eBay and am wondering whether to wear it for a job interview I have in a few weeks. What do people think about brown suits for interviews? And what would I wear it with? I'm thinking white slim fit shirt with cutaway collar, and perhaps a burgundy or dark red knitted tie, tie bar and white silk pocket square? Less sure on the shoes, I have a smart par of Black Oxfords or my Mermin double monks. The job is at a university - so not hyper conservative, but not exactly 'creative industries' either! I have a grey suit as a backup, safer option.
The suit looks like this.

Outfit sounds great, but please wear the mermins. Black and brown make a frown. (In a formal environment at least)

As jobs are at a premium these days, I think you need to be as careful as possible for an interview. The best thing is to avoid anything that could put someone off. You might think you look smart, but you could come over as cocky if you're better dressed than the interviewer.
Don't forget, you only have to please him/her for an hour or two. If you get the job you can annoy the crap out of them for years after.![]()
I can't see the suit colour would cause any difficulties at a university (but you are probably in a better position to make that call).
I'd team it with dark brown or oxblood shoes.
A knit tie would probably be appropriate: slightly less formal than a standard tie but still smart.
I'm not sure about the tie bar or silk pocket square, however, personally. Tie bars and silk handkerchiefs look a bit flash. That's not quite right for an interview. Leave the tie bar and go for a plain linen handkerchief, would be my suggestion.
@Gnasher well for 12 months anyway, the position is temporary, as is increasingly the case these days! Yes, need to be reasonably careful, though I think it is still appropriate to wear a suit, even if the interviewers are not. I think the monkstraps might be a bit much tbh. Will see if any of my brogues look OK with the suit.
@Wolf, good call re the tie bar/pocket square.
Yes, it's nearly ALWAYS appropriate to wear a suit, regardless of the job.
Perhaps I'm just a chicken but if I were you I'd opt for your backup option, the grey suit as I don't think a job interview is necessarily a good time to take a risk. After all you can wear your Reiss suit as much as you want once you've scored the job. However, if you do opt to wear the Reiss I'd recommend pairing it with dark brown brogues. Good luck with your interview!
