It does seem unfair and unnecessary but I guess they're just making sure that money doesn't get spent anywhere else. Perhaps we should petition.
I really can't stand credit notes. Today I have spent my lunchtime returning gifts from Christmas (not all mine) and on each occasion have been given a credit note/gift voucher instead of a refund.
I now have £279 to spend in Ted Baker, £20 in Topman and £25 in Next and there isn’t anything I want to buy from any of them.
Is it really that hard to get a refund when the item has been unworn, still has the tags and has a receipt?
It really annoys me. There is so much I want from other stores that I’m unwilling to spend the credit notes just for the sake of it. That money could go towards things I actually want.

Just buy everything online then they have to give you a refund.
No sorry mate, I meant in future buy stuff online because of distance selling regulations they have to give you a refund by law.
You could easily sell them all on eBay, especially those topman/next ones they will sell for close to original price.

I've managed to get a refund out of Ted Baker before, I had to kick off a bit though. Bastards.
Why not call/email the head office and try to get a refund? Worth a go.
I think it's pretty cheeky not to offer refunds in this day and age.
