Graduation On A Budget

I have my university graduation in a couple of months and am looking to wear a single-breasted suit to the ceremony and a double breasted dinner suit to the Grad ball.

Question is: How risky/is it impossible to buy black flat-fronted trousers with a matching single-breasted jacket and then buy a black DB dinner jacket separately [or vice-versa]? Or would there be no way of matching this properly?

As a nearly finished [but still poor] student I'm trying to avoid buying two completely different suits, but equally don't want to turn up to a black tie event in a jacket and trousers that look awful.

you could definitely pull it off. Just have to get creative and search around! I always think a bit of mismatched fun can go a long way! No need to show up and look exactly like everyone else.
