I'm umm-ing and aaa-ing over whether to buy a velvet blazer or not. After the modern bohemian article that FB did a few weeks ago I started to like the idea of having one. What do you guys think of them? Also, if I were to buy one (probably in burgundy), what could I wear it with? Can it be worn as part of a casual and a smart outfit?
Velvet blazers are by their nature both extravagant and luxurious, and should be worn as such. They are purely evening pieces in my view.
Outfitwise, a burgundy blazer would make a great alternative top-half for a black tie look, especially with black velvet slippers or an evening scarf. For a more casual look, it would work with a crisp, white button-down and slim jeans, maybe with some solid loafers.
In general, keep it for the evening and always make it the focus of any outfit you put together.
Thanks for the reply Nath, I've found one I like that is a bargain so I think I might just go for it. Most of the looks I've seen have the model wearing the blazer with either smart black trousers of slim/skinny black jeans, so that's probably often what I'd go for.
A velvet blazer is purely an evening piece in my opinion. Should be worn with black trousers and a white shirt or very similar variation. Can't think of any other situation or combination which wouldn't make it look out of place, where a regular blazer would suffice. It's a tricky one to get right but it can be a great piece to pull together an evening outfit.
I actually think velvet blazers can look stylish, not just as part of an evening look but also as part of a smart casual or semi formal outfit. After all, if you're going to buy a statement piece, why keep it for special occasions?
I agree with NATH6644's suggestion, simply pair your velvet blazer with smart loafers, a crisp white shirt and jeans for a smart casual look. Personally I'd choose dark brown loafers over black loafers. Although, if you pair your blazer with slim black jeans and a black shirt, then black loafers will work well.
