Casual Shoe/Trainer Recommendations

I'm in need of some pretty casual shoes or trainers - I've got loads of loafers and pair of brogues, and usually wear casual loafers with slim/skinny jeans, but want something more casual for day wear, and also with loafers I usually wear them sockless because they are quite open, and when it's colder soon, I need a proper shoe/trainer.

I've always been put off the idea of trainers - either the image of old style nike reebok's and connotations they have, or ultra unstylish sporty trainers come to mind. What shoes does anyone recommend - they'll be worn with slim jeans/t shirts and jumpers/jackets.

Are converse any good? Don't want to spend a bomb on them either because they'll get scuffed and can't afford to splash out anyway.

Sadly I'm also reaching this stage in my style development. However, I'm considering desert boots as a compromise. Is this an option? People say they're not practical for colder weather but I think if you've got a suede protector to hand, then they're no worse than canvas trainers, especially white ones.

I'd go for a leather white trainer, such as a Converse Jack Purcell. Or you could opt for a hi top, such as Supra, but I'm not sure how long they will last. (mine ripped a bit on the front after like 3 months of light use last winter)

In my case, since I already have a canvas Converse and a Supra hi top, a desert boot would be my next port of call. It seems to connect the bridge between smart and casual pretty nicely.

Desert boots are definitely suitable for cold weather, I wore mine throughout last winter (including in snow one evening). As you say Nath, spray some suede protector on (and add some thick socks) and you're good to go.

As for trainers, I have a few pairs of Chucks that only get occasional use these days, although I like the look of Jack Purcells as well. I think those sort of slimline, unfussy trainers work best for a slightly more stylish casual look.

As for desert boots, do you know where to get some fairly affordable ones? I know loads of places and brands sell them now, so hoping t pick some up fairly inexpensively..

Any idea where you might be picking up the Jack Purcells? I've been surfing around the web and the only ones I found are either from Amazon or eBay (the white leather version)

As for desert boots, I'd strongly suggest in saving up and getting the Clark's Originals for around €100 (or less on eBay) They are praised a lot...but ASOS's aren't half bad either.
