Hi Lads,
Ive only joined site recently. I want a pair of brogues but have a couple of questions. Are they very comfortable as ive had operations on my hips (very long crap story) so i'm stuck with buying Ecco shoes for comfort as any flat or fashion shoes wreck my feet and tire me out. I also shy away from heavy shoes.
I rarely wear a suit and would intend my brogues to be for mainly casual use, I dont like light tan colours, I prefer darker brown and dont want really "busy" detailing. It appears that Loakes are a good brand, could you guys recommend a suitable pair from their range?
Secondly I will be in Berlin next week, are there any German brands as good as say Loakes that I should look out for.There should be a thread on travel destinations and recommendations from members for places they have been(if not already here)

Hi Ray,
Proper leather shoes are potentially a good choice as they mould specifically to your foot but you will have to go through a relatively long period of breaking in to get them properly comfortable, I've had no bad experiences with my Loakes but I know a couple of people have found them to be a bit uncomfortable; they're still a quality brand though. My advice would be to go and find somewhere that stocks them (preferably their flagship store in London) and try them on in the flesh, then you'll get a good idea of what size you need.
Size is everything with leather shoes, if you get it wrong you will definitely notice it. If you find you're still left with a bit of space you can also invest in a set of insoles but then you don't break the shoes in in quite the same way. You also have to watch out for the leather soles.
In short, they could definitely be worth the investment if you are prepared (and can) spend the time breaking them in and not suffer negatively from them. they'll last for years and be a fantastic addition to your wardrobe.
check out the Loake Worton, Burford boot or Chester.
Not sure about any German brands unfortunately.

Not a really big fan of the soft leather look...

I've recently sold my Angus boots, mine were a kind of mid brown but I made them a bit darker with polish. I really like them, the patterning is quite restrained and they a good shape.
