Drop Crotch Jeans and Trousers

Drop Crotch Jeans and Trousers

Guys, it’s about time we all started dropping that ridiculously tight (and lets admit not exactly comfortable) crotch we have all been donning this 2009. Let the skinny legged acid washed denims take a well earned break. I am still feeling the bare ankle look that I’ve seen so many of you brave lot still donning (even in these sub-zero temperatures), none-the-less your freezing ankles will look great sporting a pair of tailored, drop crotch trousers!

There has been a lot of fashion debate and deliberation into whether the drop crotch look should pass over to men from women. As summer ‘09 has seen the female of the species flourish into outrageously cool vixens with some of the most popular garments flying of the shelves being the endless varieties of harem pants (dropped crotch) and playsuits.

Spring 2010 menswear fashion shows has seen designers such as Givenchy, Kris Van Assche, Rick Owns and many others bringing swinging pelvic girdle’s over to men’s high fashion (see image above), so I for one say “HELL YES”! After all, drop crotches started with men back in the 19th century with French infantry troops wearing Zouave pants and Indian men wearing light airy cotton Harem pants. Yul Brynner brought them to the silver screen in the “The King and I” in 1956, but they didn’t appear in fashion for decades, until Yves Saint Laurent resurrected them in the 1970’s.

In the late 1980’s Billowing Knee length crotches were thrown into hip hop fashion world by the one hit wonder legend M C Hammer. However not even the most daring of fashionista should attempt teaming Drop Crotches with a backward flat peak and oversized hoodie! I am thinking more along the line of a pair of Black Dropped Crotched Trousers (All saints stock a gorgeous tailored pair), Brown Vintage Shoes and a checked shirt, and if you’re really daring chuck a Bow Tie, and a Brown Leather Holdall into the equation and (BOOM) you’re left with a confident fashion forward look!

Also Boots, Boots, Boots! Military boots were already featured yesterday as a trend that is going nowhere this year… but cowboy, army, lace-up, zip-up and even velcro boots all look great with a low hanging denim crotch, and for the fashionable professional 9 – 5′er try a less exaggerated wool or Tailored dropped crotch to liven up the ever so tired Office suite. I foresee a cut off / shorts version hanging loosely round every cool guy’s knees this coming 2010 summer, so get on board early and be there at the start instead of playing catch up this year.

They’re still pretty hard to find for men due to the cold winter season but here are a couple of great examples I’ve hunted down just for you…

I’ve been rocking drop crotch jeans and trousers for a couple of years now and love them!! All Saints and Vivienne Westwood definitely do the best styles.

I normally wear mine with some gusset style pumps or military boots.

  • Ashley – FB Writer:

Great article Jacob! I’ve also been wearing this style for quite some time, having to tailor them myself out of bootcut/worker style jeans before the drop crotch came to market….which was a pain in the arse and I much prefer the product picks.
Topman have also just got a great collection of drop crotch trousers in also….definitely worth a look peeps!

Does anyone think the wearer of drop crotch trousers has to be of a certain height for them to look right?

Personally I think if you are too tall they arent going to look as good as they do on someone who’s a little shorter.

  • Lee Malone:

Great article Jacob, I started wearing these last summer and All Saints and Vivienne Westwood are definitely on top of this trend, Topman have just started to release their own version called carrot top jeans for S/S 10 and Aqua Couture in Leeds has a number of styles.

And I don’t think it matters what height you are, just aslong as you’re wearing them right, I’m 6′2 : )

I got a brilliant pair of drop crotch jeans from All Saints recently for £55 and I love them, highly recommended! Only problem is I’m 6′3″ and they only come in one leg length…

I absolutely love drop crotch trousers, all saints definately do the best ones!

I personally think the drop crotch/carrot style does look better on shorter people, as the drop is made that more prominent.

Timothy, All Saints have a stand alone store in Miami and LA.

You can also order online via http://www.allsaints.com, just select the US bit at the top right hand side.

@jacob really like thos grey woolen trousers in the bottom left corner, very nice and great find.

I managed to pick up these drop crotch jeans in the all saints 20% sale beginning dec for £60.

    http://www.allsaints.com/product/?all=1&page=1&category_id=7&&prod_desc_id=5051214514222&position=6

they look cool with my white nike air jordans, black/grey air jordan hi tops and my tan brogues for a smarter look, just wish i could find other pairs trousaers or chinos that have this fit just above the top of the trainer/shoe so you can show off a nifty pair socks once the weather gets warmer !

i now what you mean about people showing off their ankles with a pair pointer boater shoes and rolled up jeans but most of those styles seem to peeps who have bought skinny jeans and just rolled them up.

Not keen on the oki ni styles though, too many inner city yoof look for me in my thirties…lol

OH. ive been wanting some for ages! but im just too cheap to buy any! ha. i love some on the oki ni website. with the hemmed ankles. but they are sold out at the moment. got any good hints of where to pick up some bargain ones? saw some in topman, i like the ones that are joggers too. great article btw! x

    Hey Guys,
Thank you for all your nice comments.
As for the height concern I don’t think it’s an issue, it depends on what look your going for. I am 5’11 and I have a few pairs with different length drops some small and discreet others not so, I have a pair that I found rummaging through a Juggling shop (of all places) that are literally mid calf length :-)

I am working on a really cool design at the moment for some sweat material, summer Drops / Joggers although how easy exercise will be in them I am not entirely sure, but I will keep you all posted.

For the Money conscious Crafted at Republic do a really cheap pair,
and you still might be in time to grab a pair in the SALES….

Hmmmmm, can I be an oike and say I’m not convinced by the drop crotch just yet. I think it’s more where my own head is in terms of the look I want but, I just don’t get them…I will say though, those middle bottom row oki-ni ones look interesting…and in browsing those I saw these: http://www.oki-ni.com/invt/dam0101crm&cm_vc=productpage – which I think are *gorgeous*.

  • Ben - FashionBeans Editor:

It’s nice to see an article get such a good response…. well done Jacob. This is going to be a massive trend within the trouser and jeans industry this year as it is just the natural progression for carrot fit which was massive last year.

Brian you can fins drop crotch sweat pants at Topman in their Jox range: CLICK HERE TO SEE THEM Which I love and personally own a pair. We even did a look book on it last year, so take a look at the category and you will find it.

Personally my FAVOURITE drop crotch are done by Humor and I missed out on them recently because they are so popular. CLICK HERE TO SEE THEM: They are beige chino type pants and have been restocked twice already. Each time I have waited a day for funds and they have gone! Next time they are in stock I am getting them in prep for Spring/Summer and there is going to be no holding me back!

Really well written and put together – It’s what I had written for my application to become a contributor for this blog! Not to worry I really enjoyed it and your picks were fantastic. I recently found myself in drop crotch trousers when I accidentally tried a pair on in Vivienne Westwood. I’m loving the look and feeling of them particularly when I’m dressing up rather than going for a more casual look. They’re definitely going to be a stand out trend this year.

would it be a good idea to remodel old jeans into such a drop crotch fashion?

if so, how do i tell the tailor who is going to do it for me and how low should the crotch go?

    Posted January 14, 2010
  • Witness01:

Okay Ben – those are lovely :-) I think I need to revise my statement lol.

    Posted January 14, 2010
  • Ben - FashionBeans Editor:

I will literally fight you for them Witness next time they get a re-stock! I can see them being the basis for many spring/summer outfits.

NOPPOL – I can’t get my head around how a tailor would manage to do this for you but if you can get it done please let us know because its a great idea to liven up trousers you might not wear anymore. Also it’s personal preference to how low the crotch would go… you can have a really subtle drop or go all out high fashion like some of the Damir Doma variaties around.

    Posted January 14, 2010
  • Jacob Kamara:

NOPPOL- When I first spotted a Guy in Drop crotches back in 2007 (he was ridiculously ahead of fashion)
I tried to tailor some myself out of old comfy fit Jeans I didn’t have the heart to throw away.
One way I tried was to taper the legs, which gives a subtle drop crotch look and a couple of favourites that I am always wearing were some old Jeans and suite trousers that I sewed big chunky zips into the legs to taper them.
Also you can try opening the middle seem and sewing a strip of fabric down the centre and then tightening the legs, I recommend giving it a go you do get a feeling of pride when wearing yourself tailored drops ? good luck!

And again a big thanks to all for your nice comments, I’m glad you enjoyed the article.

This fit of jeans / trousers is easily my favourite , a slim leg and small leg opening without having to strangle your upper leg. However , i still struggle to find pairs i like , they either gather too much the leg or arent a nice wash.
Anyway , good article. Those grey humor trousers are very nice , ive seen the jeans before but not those , i may have to get a pair.

I think it definately depends on the style, fortunately there starting to hit the shelves in different shapes and sizes so you should be able to find the perfect pair for your shape and hight..

@rasco this type of fit of jeans is exactly what you and me need, maybe you need more room in the upper thigh but want very slim at the bottom. I am normally size 32/32 in most fits of denim but found myself buying a 30 waist in this type of fit cos these below come up very large in the waist..

Hmm… it seems like almost everyone is giving this trend a positive response. Probably most of you guys are obsessed fashionistas following every single trend.

I must admit I’m a fan of skinny jeans although the trend pretty much hinted that you borrowed them from your girlfriend’s.

As for the drop crotch jeans, I must say I would never jump aboard this trend. Seriously, lets save it for the ladies. They do it so much better. Some things are unisex but not let this be. It looked like the baggy trend for rappers had sex with skinny trend for wannabe and real rockstars alike. As a result, the bastard child drop crotch pants came to be.

The proportions of these pants are just not at all good any way. We are not all born with oversized testes thankyou!

Hey guys. New to the site, and just jumping aboard the deep crotch bandwagon. Liking a few pairs from All Saints, namely the “Sputnik’s”. Also like the Humors. And when im going for the hood look lol, might get the Topman Jox. However I am quite small, about 5 ft 6, and wondering if anybody has got any of the ones I have mentioned and will think they will suit my height? And regarding the Jox, im not chubby, but have SLIGHTLY big thighs, so should I go for a medium or large instead of a tighter small? Would be really helpful if someone could explain how they fit. Thanks

  • DOM.:

When I saw this trend first appear i loved it since my thighs decided i had to sit out the skinny jeans trend. But now i’ve seen so many girls working the trend , i can’t bring myself to wear them. I don’t think we as males claimed it quick enough! The ugg boot for example, just as many men than women wear them down under, but because when they arrived here the ladies jumped on the bandwaggon first, mens ugg boots were much slower to take off and are still ‘off limits’ to many men (the term ‘mugg’ boots comes to mind).I believe the same fate lies for the drop-crotch trend. I think its bad enough if I spot another guy wearing the same clothes when I’m out, but to come out matching the girls? I just think some trends can’t be mixed between the sexes and this is one of them.

ANIL – I think you will probably look really good in Drop crotches, they’re great for really tall guys and shorter guys.

I am not massively tall and I think really deep drops look better on me, you’ll probably find the same works for you.

I love the Jox from Topman, I would say the M, you might get drowned in the Large ones and loose the effect of the drop crotch.

KEVINMIXIN – Oh my days, everyone is trying to get there hands on those Infamous OKI-NI’s
They’re are always out of stock. Grrrrrr!!!

I would of got another few different pairs if I had the dough on me! Will be going back over the next few weeks to pick some more up.

Yeah I might get drowned in the large, just waiting for the Medium to come in stock online now!

By the way, there is a picture of you on another page on this site of you in a pair of drop crotches, did you make/alter those yourself?
