Following on from last weeks yellow clothing feature, a number of you pointed out that purple also seems to be coming on strong for the coming high summer season. I have seen some amazing new pieces recently in purple which is definitely a first for me because it has NEVER been this strong before in men’s fashion since I can remember. I think it’s because men’s fashion is gaining momentum and soon we will hopefully get to the stage where women’s fashion is at; ideally in that designers are always pushing boundaries and coming up with new creative patterns, cuts and styles each and every season. It will also hopefully bring about better budget men’s fashion clothing as I think there is definitely space for someone like Topman to come along and really produce amazing pieces that are right on trend but at lower prices.
Anyway, purple again is a colour that looks amazing in the summer and really stands out. The best thing is, it is a contrasting colour that can be used WITH yellow as well in order to give a really funky summer look. The colours work so well together that you could throw on a yellow tee and lightweight purple knit and look amazing. Remember to not overdo it, you don’t want to look like a massive uncoordinated collection of colours or Willy Wonka when you put your outfits together. Subtlety is the key – one piece of bright statement clothing will do and you can add an accessory as well.
Here are some picks from the latest purple ranges. I suggest you add this amazing colour to your wardrobe quick, as it is an amazing colour and it won’t be around for too long in so many styles.
Hot Summer Colour – Purple Clothing
Here is a LOAD of stuff I have found through various stores on the Internet. There is a mixture of clothes, accessories and footwear. High and low price items are featured so hopefully there is something suitable for all of you. I particularly love the Adidas Samba’s which are on pre-order at the moment, but adding some cool sunglasses, a polo and a knit/jacket would be a good idea. Enjoy.

great post, whats the top right pic from?
I think it’s a great colour…and there’re a few things I like from that selection (bottom left, the superfly t-shirts and the reem polo 4 up on the left). One thing though, well, it does strike me as the same old, same old in terms of the designs…wow, guys clothes, lets wheel out *more* polos and hoodies. It’s not even that they’re not nice examples of polos and hoodies, they are – it’s just that there doesn’t seem to have been much progression in the last 10 years. Does that make sense?
Hanman – Top right is an image I grabbed just searching off the internet and added to my look book so unfortunately can’t remember where it’s from. Would be easy to pull off though. Plain purple tee, throw on some slim trousers/chinos, and waistcoat over the top. Scarf optional.
Witness01 – Agree with you, it seems like designers aren’t really progressing in the mainstream brands (Diesel, GStar, Lyle and Scott etc.) as they know it sells to the masses so don’t have top put much thought into it.
However it is getting better… a few years ago you wouldn’t be able to grab purple colourways very easily or yellow or pink for that matter. The designers are trying to expand but it takes progression each season.
Also I don’t think you would of found the same range of boat shoes, fashion scarfs, and accessories you find now, so there is hope for new creativity. If you really want some unusual high fashion sort of stuff you should look at Martin Margiela, Rick Owens, Jil Sander and RAF Simons and the like. You will pay a premium for it though.
The way we can combat this lack of creativity is to look out for unusual items or throw outfits together creatively through layering or colour contrasts. You can definitely get cooler accessories and knitwear now that provides that bit of “extra” to your outfit.
Also the trend of rolling up jeans in the summer and skinny ties in a relaxed outfit means that men’s fashion is gathering momentum… we are seeing actual “trends” for men now like women do each season. They are still way ahead of us, but luckily those of us men who are interested in fashion do have ways of standing out and creating a unique style already.
The next 5 years should be good for men’s fashion and I think it’s going to explode – I can’t wait to show you it all as it happens!
Im so obsessed with purple theses days!!!
i have two purple grpahic t-shirts that are amazing.. and purple super skinny Levi’s jeans that fit me perfectly…
it is the perfect color because u dont hav to try much to stand out…
Loving that top right image and as you say Ben it’s so easy to pull off and would look just as funky with a relaxed shirt like the Soul Cal one above as the tee in the photo.
I’m presuming the perfect accessory for the purple is going to have to be a velvet purple Daily Milk bar??!?!
Everything SoulCal on this page is so disgusting in my opinion.
hmm i should post the purple hoodie by american apparel! the godfather of purple hoodies atm! everyone is wearing them .. even in clubs etc.. its like a insider partyppl thing i guess^^
*you should .. not me^^
Good article. I love this colour but it has to be the right shade. Other than my snowboard pants ive struggled to get fashion items in purple until ear;y this year. I picked a great pair of KG loafers in purple a few months ago.
Though i love the colour i find it really hard to find any clothing i like in purple.
Also , i love clae’s ( The purple mids next to the adidas sambas ) i really want to purchase them in black but im just not sure what to wear with them.
