Head to Head - V-Neck vs Crew Neck T-shirts

Head to head time and we have two very popular classic styles for your t-shirts… V-neck or Crew neck? V-neck have become very popular over the last 5 years or so, as it became more and more acceptable for men to show off a bit more chest, and their more sensual/metro sexual side. It has coincided with an increase in the amount of men taking proper care of themselves now-a-days with many going to the gym regularly, taking supplements and grooming daily, in order to have themselves looking the best they can be.

This as we should all know has come from the popularisation of many new media outlets like blogs (hello!), twitter, social networks, online dating etc. where now you have obscenely good looking male role models thrust down your throat everywhere you turn, and has put the pressure on us all to look our best and raise our standards. I know half of you are probably reading this blog now trying to get better at fashion and learn a few little tricks that will make you more appealing to the opposite sex, or just have more confidence in yourself as a whole.

Anyway, I have kind of gone off on a tangent there and let’s get back to the question.. do you now prefer the traditional crew neck or the v-neck t-shirts? There are benefits to both and to be honest should be used for different occasions. I love V-necks now and continuously seek them out when I shop at the moment. I think in summer they particularly work well as you can show off a bit more of the body you have been working on all year, and your skin should have a bit of a healthy glow from being out in the summer sun. I find basic v-neck styles work very well for layering purposes under shirts, waistcoats, cardigans and other items that have low neck lines. This is because the bottom point of the v-neck will finish close to where the layered item starts, giving your outfit better proportions. Hopefully this picture below will explain it:

V-neck and Crew neck comparison

As you can see the image on the right I think looks more in proportion in comparison to the other for layering purposes. There is equal distancing between the chin to the v-neck point to the start of the cardigan. You will find this as a general rule when layering with v-necks.

Crew necks are good because they are traditional. If you are not completely confident with your body or don’t want to expose chest hair then you can hide your insecurities behind a great crew neck tee. They are also most popular in the general population so there are infinitely more styles available for you to choose from. Which is always a great thing, as the designers feel pressure to produce high quality tees in order to compete.

They are also great for layering under shirts, allowing you to unbutton one more than you usually would, or even leave the shirt completely open. They are great for formal wear under jackets/blazers, and large chunky knitwear. They can also be worn on their own in a simple casual outfit without fuss.

Either way your wardrobe should consist of a collection of basic crews and v-necks in order to create the basis of any outfit. Monochrome colours and greys are great for layering as they mix well with many styles, colours and patterns. I have been searching the Internet for some of the best examples I can find for each and listed them below. They are not expensive, and are great fashion investments for your wardrobe. These will be worn time and time again you can be sure of it!
