I haven’t done a look book for a while as I have been gathering all the photos I can find from famous celebrities, brand promotional images etc in order to make a collection of looks that I think are great and can easily be pulled off by all of you reading. So from now on you will be getting a weekly look book, which is a collection of items that make a specific outfit in your wardrobe. This means you can buy all the pieces you need in order to make a great look, and know that when you go to your wardrobe, you can just throw it on and go.
This weeks look book comes courtesy of Ed Westwick. For those that don’t know him, he is on the show Gossip Girl, which has made quite a big impact over here on the girls of the UK. He pays one of the main characters in the series which is renowned for their very upper class preppy style. Off set, he has just as good a sense of style… he has been featured in GQ, Arena, Harpers Bazaar and fronted a recent K Swiss print campaign. The look we are going for today is on the right of the picture at the top. It is perfect for the British summer time, as it features the staple basics in jeans and a basic bright summer t-shirt, but then can be layered with a nice leather jacket (the weather is unpredictable here!) and the focal point of the outfit for me…. the boots.
I love big worker boots like these and feel they really stand out. A slim fit pair of jeans tucked in slightly is a great look, especially for tall males (I am around 6″ – 6″1) as it provides some girth to the bottom half of your outfit and gives your long legs proportion in contrast to your upper body. They also look great and will normally last throughout the seasons. They are something that wouldn’t look out of place in Autumn/Winter outfits and are a great investment piece for this season to carry over. I guarantee we do a lot of look books this year that will feature similar styles. The pictures of Ed above feature him on two different days, but I just wanted to show that they look perfect with any outfit and his basics stay the same: Leather jacket, blue straight/slim jeans and boots. This is a perfect basis for your outfit.
Get The Look – Items You Need
Here we go, I am going to try and do high and low prices so you can mix and match. Some items you might already have in your wardrobe so you can use them and add what you need. I personally would never scrimp on the leather jacket or boots as they are items that will last a long time and should be looked at as an investment. They will never go out of style and come back strong each and every year. Plus they only look better with age when they are worn in.
The bright tee could be any colour. A V-neck works really well in his get up when layered, so try and stick with that for now. Of course you can use a graphic t-shirt as well, but what I think really works well is how simple the whole outfit it, with basic contrasting colours and using statement pieces like the boots, belt and jacket to really stand out and give you that fashion edge. Men’s fashion doesn’t have to be hard, having that effortless style like you just “threw it on” is where we should all try to aim for.
If you want to go all out with this look and have medium/long hair, then I think slicking it slightly gives you that mod/rocker look. I think his hair in that picture on the right really makes a statement as well and adds something to the overall look. You can get this by buying some pomade, which is like a water based styling product that gives your hair shine. You don’t need much of it normally (as otherwise it can look greasy), but I will show a couple of options for that at the end of the post too. Top to bottom:
Leather Jacket
You can pick a really nice one up for around £100-£200, but don’t worry if you have to go slightly cheaper. The key is to slim fit your jacket so it adds to the rocker look. His has a collar but this is not necessary, and I think you should go for classic black, as it works with so many colour combinations and can be thrown over anything. The one on the right is not leather but a substitute material that looks just like it but costs less.

Perforated Biker Jacket £45 |
V-Neck
If you are going to go blue with blue like Ed above, you need to mix and contrast your shade with your jeans. Go for a bright blue or neon even with darker jeans so you can differentiate your top and bottom half. Especially important if it’s hot and you don’t have your jacket on over the top.

| Religion Blue V-Neck T-Shirt £24 |
Blue Contrast Y-Neck T-Shirt £6 |
Belt
I have gone with a dark brown cheaper belt as it matches the cheaper boots and a black belt for the more expensive one because the boots are a slightly darker grey/black. Always match belt colour with your footwear if dealing with leather/formal items.

Jeans
Slim fit blue jeans are the way to go here. You probably already have a suitable pair so I’ll just give you some examples. A mid wash would probably look best in summer but go with whatever you are comfortable in.

Boots
Both of these pairs of boots are beautiful and you can have lace ups or pull on. It doesn’t really matter as long as they look great because they will really set off your outfit nicely and give you that fashion edge.

I love this look! I’m doing something just like it with the All Saints combat Boo-its (unzipped) and black slim or skinny jeans – I can see this style rolling right in to winter. Hmmmmm, actually, I need a decent leather jacket…
first off, i want to say your blog/website is amazing!!!
and a question…
u know how u said keep the shirt simple. well… if i wore a graphic tee, a pair of skinny jeans, a lean leather jacket and a pair of nice boots and wore a square scarf/muffler with the outfit… would that be too over the top??
Hi David,
Thanks for the compliments – always appreciated!
We put these look books together for people who want to learn about fashion and to give them some “go to” looks they can throw on and KNOW work in a hurry. Anyone can however adjust them and add their own unique style to them – in fact I encourage it!
From what you have said above I think you know your fashion quite well and have an idea of what you want to go for in your look. What you described would definitely WORK.
I said to keep it simple because some beginners will throw on some crazy t-shirts, accessories or layers etc. trying to “peacock” when the above looks perfect to me. My sense of fashion is quite simple cut/colours but I will add some flair to my outfits. That is my personal choice though, you will have your own style because you are an individual.
From what you described above, I think it is something that would definitely make you stand out without being over the top. Keep the scarf simple and let your boots and graphic tee do the talking.
In fact on the pics at the top on the left you can see he has a dark coloured skinny scarf of some kind wrapped around his neck and the tee/top underneath seems to be striped nautical (massive trend) so it seems this look you pointed out is reinforced. Good work
