Last week I put together a collection of items I had bought over the weekend or stuff I definitely wanted to add to my wardrobe when I get the chance (read: funds). This week I have put together a selection of new items and SALE items which I really like and think would be a great addition to your wardrobe. I have mainly been looking to add to my summer basics: like vests, shorts, and light t-shirts.
I have also been looking at some good quality shirts which are a little more formal – these I am looking to wear on nights out, either with a nice waistcoat or skinny tie. Short sleeve shirts are an especially good look through summer as it keeps that laid back summer vibe but is dressy enough to make an impression. Plus when was the last time you saw a guy rocking a short sleeve shirt with a tie?
There are also some amazing sales going on at the moment, so there are maybe a few randoms items in there that I just thought were too much of a bargain to pass up. It’s a good idea to stock items when they cost a lot less, because it is like buying a new item of clothing when you break it out for the first time. Like if you have the money at the moment you can get some great jackets, knitwear and shoes for cheap that would be more suited to Autumn/Winter but would cost double as much buying them then. This is why it is a good idea to plan your next season’s wardrobe in advance, as you always stay ahead of the game and get more clothes for your money. Especially important in this economy.
So take a look through the picks below, and let me know what you think.

Gibson shoes are class, i’ve a black tie wedding coming up soon, they’ll do me nicely……any tips for a wedding like that?
That white short sleeved shirt and the tie are *lovely*. Those farah shorts look good too! Also like that top left stand out ribbed top…very nice. Plus, you can never have too many decent vests. I tend to shy away from Fred Perry slightly – not because it’s not good stuff, but because I’ve probably over done polos in the past
Steven – Without knowing the specific details of the wedding the key to any occassion and event is dressing for it.
If you are going all out Tux, then you can add some extra flair or style to your look with a nice waistcoat layered under your dinner jacket and/or adding a nice silk pocket scarf if you have a top pocket (look at the photo at top).
By wearing a waistcoat you can take off your jacket and still look smart and have that great fashion forward layered effect.
However this day is probably about your friend and you also don’t want to be a d*ck with all the attention on you and your “out there” outfit. With black tie events and when the dress code is standard, being fashionable doesn’t mean you have to be wild/different – you just need to make sure your suit/tux, waistcoat, shirt, trousers etc are all tailored to perfection and it fits your body. Just the cut of your suit will make you look 1000′s times better than someone who picked one off the rack and didn’t take care fitting everything in proportion.
Accessories can also enhance your image. A really nice silver wristwatch (what is know as a statement piece) or even pocket watch will add some class and stature to your overall look.
If it’s bow tie then you are set, if it’s tie again you can add a fashion edge with a nice skinny silk tie/knitted tie/square cut tie. Again it’s all about the little details at formal events not trying too mcuh to be different – this comes off as completely “try hard” and contrived.
I hope this helps – I do get a lot of questions about this type of thing so next week I will look to put a little guide together about formal events and the appropriate style rules.
Witness I love those shorts – I actually did order them. I’m really into the relaxed formal look at the moment, so will mix short sleeve shirts with jeans or smart shorts and a nice skinny tie. Tucking in my tie a couple of buttons down is also a nice little thing I like to do at the moment. Gives that casual dress down friday style.
I am doing a post today on shorts actually and how to wear them properly… followed by a post tommorow showing exactly what I mean by throwing some looks together.
Polos are very much a trend for me too. I did not do them a lot last year but I am into them in a big way at the moment trying out new ways to rock them. I like the Fred Perry limited edition stuff and the RAF Simons collaboration more than the original stuff – just adds a little extra to it in terms of style.
Hey,thanks for this nice post.
I am an avid viewer of this site.
Can you post an article about get-ups that involve shorts?
I bought some pairs and I just can’t pull off any attire with shorts. *sigh
I can’t see my comment.
Sorry Pinoyrocks, your first comment had been caught in the spam filter for some reason. That’s so weird because I literally just posted a story about shorts and how to wear them properly.
Tommorow as I said above, ill put some quick outfits together that will show you how versatile shorts can be.
great work ben, cheers mate, i’ll try & take it all in
Hi Ben im out later this month in brimingham at bushwackers im thinking something smart but casual any ideas?
Hi Simon,
I have never had the pleasure of going to Bushwackers so unfortunately I can’t really give out specific advice, but I will give you some ideas.
Right now we have 4 MAJOR trends that are coming through for the new season:
Geek Chic
Checked Shirts/Worker Wear
Military
Chunky Knitwear
My absolute favourite is the geek chic look so maybe try a relaxed formal look in that. If you click the link above you will see how I put together 3 different outfits in that look.
Alternatively (checked shirt trend) if it is more relaxed than that you could go with some great fitting dark jeans, a real bold stand out check shirt in a red or blue, then throw on a great plain cardigan over the top.
For military you could roll with a simple but classy outfit like dark slim jeans, military shirt (with epaulettes) in a black/white, then throw on the skinny tie and military jacket over the top. A real fashion forward way to rock a relaxed formal outfit with an “edge”.
Take a look through the articles above and you should find some inspiration. You can mix trends as well – checked shirt with braces on top, military jacket with geek specs. As long as you feel totally confident and congruent – you will pull it off and look great!
How about something like this (click here) as well? Just throwing ideas at you now! The look book section off the top navigation has a variety of looks you can roll with.
i like this one, the sneakers they are the best
good job
