Dockers K-1 Khaki – Rough Riders Collection
Renowned for their classic chino trousers, Dockers have a history of producing quality menswear pieces. However, their new K-1 khakis collection presents an alternative, interesting take on men’s style.
The collection is inspired by American history in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and takes a particular influence, along with its name, from the cavalry regiment commanded by Theodore Roosevelt. By choosing to focus on such a narrow period in history the collection features a distinct vintage look, yet is blended with modern casual staples to avoid appearing dated.
As expected, there is a strong military influence but with a historical twist. This aesthetic is epitomised by the ‘Cavalry Jacket’, which looks like a cross between a modern field jacket and a belted safari jacket.
The ‘Enlisted Man’s Chinos’ is, as its namesake suggests, also influenced by military wear, particularly the cut and detailing of infantry trousers. For those that really want to embrace the current military trend, there is even a chino inspired by the classic U.S. army trouser – complete with side stripe. These give off a vintage air and would make a great statement piece for anyone looking to embrace the ‘war hero’ look that was recently broken down on FashionBeans.
The prominent military wear is balanced by timeless casual pieces that prevent the collection looking like a costume. A thick plaid shirt and waffle knit henleys help add a rugged edge, whilst casual shirts, thick knitwear and neutral chinos provide classic casual workwear.
The two main influences on the collection are brought together in the K-1 ‘Muck Wash Chino’. Inspired by a trouser that dates back to the early 1900s, found in an abandoned coal mine, the piece takes the traditional tan chino and applies a brutal worn-looking wash that gives it an extremely aged feel.
Overall, the Dockers K-1 collection provides an interesting take on classic menswear. With its extreme approach to rugged style it is almost diametrically opposed to the current industry movement towards a more tailored, refined aesthetic – crafting its own rough around the edges look for those with more casual tastes.
