Introduction

Consider an arena that creates such an unforgiving assault on the senses and you’ll be hard pressed to recall one that rivals fashion. It’s a rare breed of industry: one that can be regarded – and regards itself – as garrulous, whilst simultaneously occupying every bit of our enduring obsession with the sensory. Without sight, even the most metallic of Burberry macs are indistinct; without touch, the weft of a grosgrain collar musters little luster; and without what we hear, the runway is soundtracked by silence. Inspired by fashion as much as it is inspiring the fashionable, the latter is quickly becoming our earnest sense of style.

Sennheiser MOMENTUM On-Ear Headphones

Observing – as much as they are creating – the synchronicity between music and fashion, Sennheiser has launched a reinvigorated line of MOMENTUM On-Ear headphones designed to delight ears and turn heads. Drawing on the work of an international team of design experts and trend scouts, the result placates to eyes as well as ears. The overall aesthetic coins its own term ‘audible-luxe’, characterised by four on point pastel colour ways as well as lightweight sliders in a solid band of premium brushed stainless steel. The corporeal form of the headphone’s rich, detailed sound is found in the headband and earpads. Both are crafted from high-tech Alcantara®, a luxury material famed for its equal aesthetic and functional values. Because the earpads fit closely to the listener, even in noisy inner-city environments the music isn’t drowned out, it’s up to you to mirror the slight bass emphasis with your own exceptional summer-ready look. Ever the experts when it comes to delivering a sound experience, the audio specialist employs a high performance transducer system to ensure seriously stylish sits alongside uncompromising performance. Apple users benefit from an in-line remote and mic on the detachable cable for easy control over what’s in your ears on the go; be it a beat or a call:

Sennheiser Campaign Photoshoot

Celebrating the synthesis between style and sound, Sennheiser invited three established fashion personalities – including myself as FashionBeans‘ deputy editor – to art direct and model in a series of shoots at the studio of one of the most eminent and admired photographers in Europe. Alexander Gnädinger worked with the likes of GQ, Arena Homme+ and Karl Lagerfeld before hosting a council of international style at his artisan workspace in Berlin. The minimal space acted as the perfect blank canvas to create what became an embodiment of personal style and a likeness to the essence of the new MOMENTUM On-Ear model.

“It was very interesting to work with the three different bloggers, to look at them, learn from them, work with their style and then jointly create a personal portrait, related to fashion, music and the new Sennheiser headphones.” Alexander Gnädinger.

FashionBeans’ competition winner, David March, aided the laudable feat of representing UK menswear in Germany by keeping followers up to date with the hashtag #SennheiserFashionShooting: “Berlin is known for being the haven of hip and Studio Gnädinger was no exception. The place oozed quirky and eclectic, making it the perfect international melting pot for creative minds. Watching Alex mould his sets around Luke’s contemporary styling was captivating. The headphones come in colours to echo all characters and both Alex and Luke really utilised this in the shoot. For Luke, the sleek styling fitted his masculine monochrome tailoring perfectly. After some long hours and an elaborate collection of pyrotechnics, Alex got shots that truly depicted the unity of sound and style.”

FashionBeans x Sennheiser Shoot

The idea for the FashionBeans arm of the shoot was to construct a classical men’s portrait, framed by an all the more masculine and darker appeal. Artist-sketched sound waves were cut out of the background and illuminated from behind to form a burnout effect that would juxtapose against the crisp round-collar shirt. The addition of coloured smoke strengthens the mystical effect and creates dimension in the final image:

The resulting visual illustrates the MOMENTUM On-Ear as a functional piece of fashion tech; one with with a luxe design that fails to jar, even with a sartorial bend, meaning they can be dressed up or down effortlessly.

Final Word

The bond between style and sound has become as engrained as the initials we have embossed on our best leather. It’s imprecise whether the rapport cultivated from the audiophile’s burgeoning interest in appearance, the sartorialist’s olive branch appreciation for musical style icons, or a collision of the two. What is evident – whether it’s through the colourful nuances (choose from blue, green, pink and ivory), high-tech Alcantara® finish (a material not unknown to automotive upholsterers) or 112db output on offer (the equivalent of listening live) – is that this is one obsession we hope endures.
