Menswear Collaboration Calls On Founder’s Subculture Past
Heritage fashion brand Lyle & Scott is the latest name to call on subcultures for a fashion project, teaming up with Universal Works on a casuals-inspired range.
The seven-piece collection, which references the involvement of Universal Works founder David Keyte in the British youth movement, reinterprets knitwear in sporting styles.
It features made in Scotland and Royal Warrant knitwear, flannel shirts with knitted collars, a bomber jacket and woollen accessories, all based on an original Lyle & Scott design that Keyte wore.
Lyle & Scott’s snowflake print, synonymous with the brand during the early eighties, is the focus of graphic prints in a palette of blue, burgundy and beige.
Emerging in the 1970s, the casuals became known for wearing British and European sportswear brands as a key part of their uniform to events such as football matches.
Alongside its collaboration with Universal Works, Lyle & Scott also teamed up with Scottish design talent Jonathan Saunders for AW14, releasing a 32-piece collaborative collection last month.
The Lyle & Scott x Universal Works collection is available now at Lyle & Scott’s Carnaby Street flagship store and online. Priced above its mainline range, pieces in the line retail from £50 for knitted accessories to £160 for the bomber jacket.
