Footwear Takes Inspiration From Chairs
Men’s footwear retailer Oliver Sweeney found an unlikely source of inspiration for its SS15 collection. The latest range takes notes from the materials, constructions, forms and memories associated with great designer chairs.
The company has experimented with unusual combinations and lightweight versions of its winter sole units, including a white commando sole for its Goodyear-welted range. Clopton (£229) features this unit in a longwing brogue, with map prints unique to each shoe on the upper.
Hepworth (£229) uses a mix of Japanese indigo selvedge and fine Italian calf, with a red heel pull accent. Meanwhile contrast natural leather welts appear on both the Brantham (£229) monk-strap and Westleton (£229) grey suede Derby. A thick white Finproject sole on the Ashby brogues and Walberswick boots is blended with bright blue or russet suede uppers.
The brand’s Italian collection features premium materials, finishes and intricate detailing such as purple suede on its Nuxis Chelsea boots and Gio brogues. Bugatti’s (£349) tamponato leather uses multiple layers of burnished polish to achieve a patina that’s unique to each pair.
Cappellini’s layers of broguing take inspiration from stacked Arne Jacobsen chairs, and caviar-grain leather is used on Sissa (£295) Oxford and Renzo ankle boots to replicate classic furniture.
£Chairs may just be something to sit on – in the same way that shoes may just be something to put on your feet – but in combining style with substance and function with form, good chairs and good shoes effortlessly integrate themselves into your daily life,” said Cooper.
The company has also ramped up the technology credentials of its outerwear collection. Its Laungton cycling jacket features hidden reflective detailing, a discreet tuck pocket and an action fit.
Finally, the minimalist all-black luggage range is crafted from a military-inspired mix of ballistic nylon and textured buffalo leather. The line features Japanese nickel zips, padded laptop sleeves and built-in extendable shoe pockets.
