Thom Sweeney RTW Debuts Exclusively On MR PORTER
Off-the-peg means going online for the design duo behind Thom Sweeney. The suit makers have joined the online ranks of MR PORTER with the label’s first ready-to-wear range.
Luke Sweeney and Thom Whiddett set up the label in 2007, hoping to offer a more contemporary take on Savile Row tailoring.
Now a go-to label for the likes David Beckham and Javier Bardem, the brand has decided to translate the success of their bespoke service to a wider audience through the e-tailer.
Thom Sweeney’s exclusive line consists of five daytime suits, a blazer, two pairs of trousers and an evening suit. The collection offers two key silhouettes: one designed for evening wear and the other more appropriate for daytime.
According to the pair, who previously worked at Timothy Everest, they made sure the collection is a true reflection of their tailored service: “It’s in line with the bespoke, right down to the way it sits on the shoulder.”
Using open weave, high-twist wool from Italian mills, the designers have ensured that quality has not been compromised despite the drop in price points, which start at £345.
Luke Sweeney said: “The shoulder line’s a bit softer than what you get on Savile Row, but we still keep the roped sleeve head. It has presence, but it’s soft to wear.”
Enabling the customer to be comfortable was also a priority when entering the project: “The main difference between the casual pieces and the formal jackets is that for the casual jackets we softened up the shoulders with a flat sleeve head, so they’re a bit easier to wear.”
The collection delivers pieces such as mohair dinner jackets and burnt orange trousers in cotton-twill fabric. A slim leg offers a more contemporary code of dress.
“Our guys don’t want to walk down the street in cropped trousers or with a jacket that stops half-way down their back. But they still want to look modern and cool.”
Thom Sweeney’s debut ready-to-wear range is available to buy now exclusively via MR PORTER.
