Denim Trend – Comfort Fit Jeans

Denim Trend - Comfort Fit Jeans

For the past few years or so the world of denim has been headed by the skinny jeans style, as worn by many pop and indie bands. However for those of us who do not have the legs to pull off this look, or just plainly don’t like it, things are about to change. During the early Autumn/Winter previews and now Spring/Summer 2010 fashion weeks around the globe, bagginess/comfort is being brought back into style by many brands, especially the big denim giants.

Two of the leading high street brands have already started to implement the trend into their stores. One of the biggest commercial denim brands around – Diesel – have favoured the looser style in their existing Autumn/Winter collections. Tucked into (or over) either boots or chunky hi-tops, the brand believe that their denim can be worn with everything and anything. French Connection have also gone with the plain and simple look with their denim, in a throwback to around 5 years ago. Loosely worn, with the hems reaching to just the back of the heel, this look is textbook when it comes to comfort fit. Sometimes simple is best.

Comfort Fit Jeans on Catwalk Previews

It doesn’t end there though, as the mega powers of fashion are also using this trend in their new Autumn/Winter 2009 collections. The fashion houses of John Galliano and D&G (see main picture) have all added extra length and loose fits into their collections. Safe to say that with the major players on the high street and the catwalks pushing it, the trend is bound to pick up quick.

Now there’s a million ways to wear a pair of jeans, however the baggy look with extra length at the bottom of the leg is the ‘in’ style for this autumn/winter season and it can go horribly wrong if worn with the wrong footwear. With big, baggy jeans you need to have substantial footwear to go with them, in order to balance your outfit and stop your footwear from being over powered. If you try to wear large comfort jeans with a small pair of canvas trainers, you might find they become lost quite quickly and this can ruin your whole outfit. With military and worker style boots really hot right now, they would be the ideal footwear to provide the size to your bottom half and you can wear them by either letting the denim hang over the boot, rested on top or tucked in like you would with slim jeans.

The good thing about denim is that no matter how baggy your bottom half is, you can always smarten your look up and clash styles on your top half. If you look at the main picture above from D&G’s Spring/Summer catwalk you can see they have paired comfort fit jeans and boots with slim fit shirts, blazers and leather jackets. It works extremely well and provides a great contrast from top to bottom half. It also means all of you who like a looser fit can rejoice and still have multiple options within your looks than just throwing on the t-shirt with them! Chunky knitwear is another massive trend that would work especially well with this type of jeans.

So take a look at the jeans below that have been released so far this season, from high street to high fashion, they are all getting on board and so there should be an option for everyone’s tastes.

Comfort Fit Jeans

One mistake that a lot of males make when going for comfort/baggy fit is to buy a regular straight fit and try to “over size”. Over sizing works on certain items like over shirts and even knitwear in order to allow you to layer extra items underneath for a new look… but in jeans it just will not let you do this because it makes the waist a lot bigger than it should be and in order to compensate you belt up extra tight giving you a situation where you have clumped and gathered extra material at the top of your jeans that then opens out. Please please stay away from that look as it just makes you look like you do not know what you are doing or even how to buy clothes that are the right size! If it’s not a fit you like in a waist size that is appropriate for you, just pass on them that time and wait until you find a comfort fit you like… do not force it!

hi ed, nice article and good to see the return of some more looser styles and away from the skinny jeans look. I tried the G star you have featured called Arc Loose Tapered the other week in the G Star store in Carnaby Street, they have a twisted feature also which look great with both hi tops and boots/shoes..They also come in two other colours, a really dark denim version which is £99 like the one u featured but the one i love is a kind of slghtly lighter than the dark version and a bit faded on the thigh, maybe Radar Arc Slate, but they go for £135.

As an owner of two pairs of G star Radar narrow rope i would recommend the G star Arc jeans to all readers, enough room in the thighs for us with footballer legs but still nicely tapered at the bottom so u can tuck them into your worker boots or they bunch up nicely over your trainers/hi tops.

In october, I also purchased a stone wash pair from Diesel called Kander which are distressed at the bottom hem and back pockets for £180 but i wear my radars virtually every other day..

Amazing first article ed, i hope this denim style applies to the ladies as well because it’s all i ever wear, and it’s good to know that HOPEFULLY we will be seeing less of boys in skinny skinny jeans. I think the topman jeans at the top you have featured are amazing and should defo be on every guys shopping list!
