Agi & Sam x Oliver Sweeney SS14 Collaboration
A mix of sharp, minimalist monotone and bright block-colouring set off Agi & Sam’s collaboration with shoe designer Oliver Sweeney, just as the design duo wind down from an extremely successful showing at the recent London Collections: MEN SS14 event. ‘Minimalist intensity’ is a buzz-phrase just coined by the team here at FashionBeans, and is incidentally something we feel captures Agi & Sam’s intention for this three piece collaboration. Removing as much extraneous detail as possible, the designers have aimed to institute the body of the shoe as “paramount”. Although FashionBeans is struggling to think of a shoe for which the body is not paramount, we certainly appreciate the idea and the execution. The standout piece of the collaboration is almost certainly the taped Derby shoe. With the usual seems masked by neon or black tape, the choice of tonal minimalism or bold multi-coloured neon creates a silhouette that becomes the striking centre-piece of this collection. Other models see a complete loss of traditional extraneous detail – such as laces – creating a fluid unified body and sole in stark black and white. The love child of a pair of Wellington boots and some hi-tops conceived after a Daft Punk concert, the Chelsea boots offer a glimpse of Agi & Sam signature patterning dappled across the soles. Completing the capsule collection, the low-top trainer “fuses monochrome leathers with contrast running soles,” producing a hybrid style that is perhaps best suited to those with a truly fashion forward personal style. That being said, this collection offers a fresh and genuine take on everyday shoes – offering affordable, premium quality footwear with a high fashion feel. Pairing any of these shoes with a short suit will help channel the refined yet directional feel of these pieces. Emphasise the monochrome palette with a black suit and tie-less white shirt (with a collar chain) for an arresting, modern look, or pair the tonal Derbies with a brightly coloured suit to accentuate their restraint.
