Pharrell Uniqlo UT T-Shirt Line
Man of the moment Pharrell Williams has teamed up with Japanese high street store Uniqlo for an exclusive t-shirt collaboration.
The Oscar-nominated singer will unveil his designs, which also includes a selection of hats, for Uniqlo’s UT line in April. The range is to sit alongside 35 new themes and over 1,200 colours and patterns plotted for the printed t-shirt arm of the brand throughout SS14.
News of the project comes after plans by Williams to produce a denim line made from recycled ocean plastic in collaboration with G-Star Raw were revealed. A potential adidas sponsorship is also rumoured to be in the pipeline but is, as now, unconfirmed.
With Uniqlo’s revamped UT line, the conception of Creative Director and former A Bathing Ape designer NIGO, the collaboration with Williams is an organic move.
NIGO instigated the union after previously assisting in rolling out Williams’ streetwear brands, Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream.
The Uniqlo line is being created in partnership with the Happy hit-maker’s creative collective ‘I am OTHER’, an umbrella company housing the artist’s outlets; including Billionaire Boys Club apparel, Brooklyn Machine Works bike builders and a YouTube channel.
The theme of otherness is present in the first look at the t-shirts, which carry the motto ‘think other’. Williams explained: “We are proud to be different and believe that individuality is the new wealth”.
One half of record production duo The Neptunes, Williams stars in the spring print campaign for Uniqlo, alongside model Barbara Palvin. The collection is also accompanied by a television advert featuring a song from the artist’s new album, GIRL.
Ahead of the official Pharrell Williams x Uniqlo release in April, Uniqlo has made one of the designs available online today. However, it has been confirmed that only 240 will be on offer and are expected to sell out.
