Who: Chris Pine
Where: Star Trek Beyond Promo, Sydney
Come the red carpet, come the navy suit. Snore. So thank god for this wake-up call from Chris Pine.
Proving his competency with the colour wheel, this burgundy two-piece is a refreshing take on traditional tailoring. Better yet, the tonal shirt makes those wine notes all the more palatable. We’ll drink to that.
Who: Dave Franco
Where: What Happens Live, Bravo
While we have no idea about the actual show, what does happen live is Dave Franco schooling the world on pared-back tailoring.
This Dsquared2 ensembles hits the traditional suit notes (sharp blazer, slim-fit trousers) with a casual twist – in this case, a fine-knit jumper that breaks up the monochrome. Smart-casual isn’t such a tricky dress code to crack.
Who: Zayn Malik
Where: New York City
Zayn Malik set off in another direction over a year ago, but he’s definitely not lost; in this instance, taking a style cab straight to Compton with layered tees and a simple, pendant chain.
Granted, the bleached jeans are an acquired taste, but then he’s got the confidence that comes with dating a Victoria’s Secret model. Fair play.
Who: Jude Law
Where: Wimbledon Men’s Final 2016
Jude Law has taught us many a style lesson, his most recent being the strengths of all-white in summer.
Suiting up usually means black or navy, tie and pocket square, loafer or Derby – but it doesn’t have to be this way. Law proves the Wimbledon dress code needn’t mean dull, thanks to tonal blue accents and luxury linen. Advantage, Law.
Who: Michael K. Williams
Where: New York
If your response to a hot restaurant reservation is still Patrick Bateman tailoring, it’s time you found a more modern style icon. Michael K Williams’ bike-ready zip-up keeps things comfortable but pressed trousers mean no stink-eye from the maître d’.
On paper, it’s an odd pair. On Williams, the muted palette pulls top and bottom together. Although anyone who’s not starred in the greatest TV show ever made should dial back on the jewelry. A man got to have a code.
Who: Justin Timberlake
Where: 2016 ESPY Awards
N*Sync alumnas Justin Timberlake may be more familiar with falsettos than five-second violations, but that didn’t swamp his style when presenting Kobe Bryant with a gong at the ESPY Awards.
A relaxed chocolate suit nods to The Great Gatsby, with a textured knitted tie and a sharp polka dot pocket square to finish. Those double denim memories fade more every day.
Who:Tom Hiddleston
Where: Australia
Does this monochrome look make up for that ‘I Love T.S’ tee? Almost.
A classic crew neck, tucked into slim-fit jeans and anchored with a leather belt and brogues might not be the most groundbreaking outfit, but it’s proof that all-black-everything always works.
