It’s the same every year. Just as you nailed your assortment of cool T-shirts, Cuban collars and chino shorts, the rain started to drizzle and the wind started to blow, meaning your entire wardrobe is now completely out of whack with what’s going on outside.

Fortunately, a new pop-up store has just opened in London’s ultra-hip Soho area, offering all the autumn essentials a man could need for the new season. From expertly cut Herringbone overcoats and debonair suede bomber jackets to rugged denim and buttery soft Chelsea boots, it’s a menswear treasure trove waiting to be plundered.

Who, then, is behind it? Some cult Japanese brand, perhaps? Or one of those achingly cool Parisian labels? Actually, it’s just good old British high street stalwart Marks & Spencer under the pseudonym ‘Mike & Tom’s’ doing the same thing it’s done for 135-years: make high-quality clothing for guys of all ages without all the look-at-me branding or designer price tag.

As the editors of FashionBeans, we got an early look inside the space at 15 Bateman Street and took the opportunity to pull together a few outfits for the months ahead to show you seven failsafe ways to dress for autumn, and beyond.

We often talk of certain menswear pieces as being perennial favourites. However, few have enjoyed as much adulation as the Harrington jacket, and for good reason. Sporty and smart in equal measures, the neat, collared design is adept at fitting into the tricky transitional period.

Though traditionally rendered in cotton, this brushed wool version offers a premium take on the classic style. Wear it with other cornerstones of the male wardrobe, such as a simple T-shirt in a contrasting colour and some dark trousers – these velvety moleskin options are especially good for keeping the chill at bay – to keep the overall effect laid-back.

The summer months might have been all about colourful tailoring, but as we move back into the cold season, it’s time to think about returning to more sombre tones. Though, that doesn’t have to mean dressing like a funeral director until spring.

The subtle burgundy shade of this sharp one-button suit will help pep up the drudgery of the 9-5 while also being perfect for the work Christmas party. On dress-down days, swap the stuffy shirt and tie for a long-sleeved polo and some squeaky-clean white sneakers, for a thoroughly modern approach to office attire.

In the world of menswear, double denim is a well-broken rule, but one that still comes with its own set of commandments. Arguably most important is the one that says you should vary the shades on show. Helpfully, Marks & Spencer’s wide range of washes makes that task a cakewalk.

Take this jeans and shirt combination. The top half is in a slightly darker shade than the bottom, avoiding an outfit that resembles denim overalls. The soft brown suede bomber helps break things further, while leather Chelsea boots drive home the western feel. Yee-haw.

If summer is all about throwing off your top layer, and winter is a time for big coat energy, then in-between autumn rests on the quality of your jacket collection. This water-repellent racer jacket is an excellent place to start building your collection, not least because the lightweight construction and minimalist design makes it easy to throw on with a range of looks.

For an everyday outfit, play it simple with a neutral T-shirt and a pair of slim-fit jeans in a dark, vintage wash for some added character, then bookend the look with a pair of standout suede Chelsea boots. Just make sure you spray the shoes with a hefty dose of suede protector before you brave the outside.

There’s nothing stylish about shivering your way through the season, which makes understanding fabrics even more important during the autumn/winter months.

Prized for its soft beyond compare touch and unparalleled insulation, a cashmere jumper is usually only an honour bestowed upon those with serious cash. Marks & Spencer’s offering is not only among the more affordable options, it also makes the perfect match for a pair of patterned trousers for a solid smart-casual outfit.

The cardigan might be a style play straight out of grandad’s book, but what the old man didn’t tell you is that not all cardigans are created equal. This fine Merino wool version, for example, leans more on the formal side, making for a smart extra layer when worn underneath a suit jacket.

When off the clock, make the knit work overtime by using it to smarten up a casual Breton top. Continue the high-low styling elsewhere with some sharp trousers and a pair of canvas sneakers, and you’ve got yourself an outfit that’s as chic as anything a Parisian could conjure up.

A statement jumper is an autumn must-have, and one that will last well into the winter months with the help of some heavy-duty outerwear. This cotton pullover is a bold number to bank for the season, with a sporty chevron stripe that draws the eye up, so your hard-won summer body isn’t sent into hibernation just yet.

Once the arctic blast descends, team it with a simple coat that places function over form – Marks & Spencer’s borg collared puffer features Thermowarmth technology for optimal insulation – and finish with a pair of dark jeans and some sturdy chukka boots.
