Agi and Sam x Topman: The Owls Collection
Hot on the heels of three successful showings at the MAN showcase at London Collections: Men, design duo Agi and Sam have created a twenty piece collection exclusively for Topman. The inspiration behind the range, entitled ‘The Owls’, is the London Olympic Games 2012 and their effects on the design duo’s east London neighbourhood. Sam says: “When London was knee-deep in the Olympics the idea of sportswear kept creeping into our minds, particularly the game that lives in the hearts and minds of most Brits, football. We were talking about football kits and there was a really weird period between 1990-92 where they all had these amazing prints.” These kits were the origins of the collection, which subsequently led to the conceptual idea of The Owls becoming a fictional football team. The duo then deliberated on who would be the perfect advocate for these kits, and therefore The Owls star player, and decided on a young George Best at the peak of his powers. The rest of the line was then focused on pieces that Best could wear both on and off the pitch. As well as the title of the collection, the idea of The Owls takes a more literal translation with the prints and patterns prominent in the collection. Owls, egg shell, feathers and nesting prints are utilised throughout; applied to Agi & Sam’s signature tailoring, suits, shirts, jersey and outerwear. The result is a collection of well cut, sports-influenced pieces with a retro twist – provided by the use of digital all-over prints and hand-drawn watercolours. The highlight of the collection is the belted trench. Featuring a feather print on an off-white base with contrasting yellow sleeves, Agi and Sam have put their own stamp on the wardrobe staple, creating a statement alternative for the contemporary male.
