Topman Design SS14 – LC:M
When the first line of the press release reads: “The statement look for Topman Design SS14 is the Techno Cowboy”, you know you’re in for a fun show. The first two defining words for the Topman Design showcase at London Collections: MEN have to be ‘short’ and ‘sweet’. The show was fast-paced, bringing classic cowboy style into the present. Iconic Western shirts were presented in beautifully embroidered silk, with the yoke given a romanticised, curved finish. Paired with loose-fitting trousers for a billowing silhouette, the collection focussed on one look and offered it in a multitude of styles. Each shirt featured hand-embroidered floral motifs – a beautifully ornate accent to complement the elegant nature of the silks. However, on closer inspection the clothes take on a darker persona, with destroyed scratch stitching and spiders “inspired by 1950s B movies”. Outerwear came in the form of varsity jackets, once again crafted from decadent silks and metallic yarns. Classic tailored jackets were given an opulent finish through embroidered lapels and shoulders, again sticking rigidly to the theme set by the Western shirts. Flashes of metallic accessories included belts and brogues in matching retro shades. The collection was a stark contrast to Topman Design’s previous AW13 offering. A totally new path, the collection could have quite easily have faltered, relying too heavily on a single look. But creative director Gordon Richardson and the Topman Design team have created a collection that will be eaten up by the fashion set, creating a cacophonic concoction of kitch fun – styled with just enough darkness to give it an edge of authority.
