From Jay Gatsby to Patrick Bateman, tailoring has literary pedigree as a way for novelists to reveal some facet of the men who wear it. Be that an obsession for a lost love, or sawing up prostitutes. So fingers crossed neither book appears in the new pop-up shop at Gieves & Hawkes’ No.1 Savile Row tailoring flagship, lest the brand’s customers feel a point is being made.

The bookshop features titles selected by the outgoing Gieves & Hawkes creative boss, Jason Basmajian, in partnership with luxury publisher Assouline. Basmajian’s literary edit reflects his own personal interest in gentlemanly pursuits such as horses, fast cars, fashion, art, design and cocktails. So no American Psycho, more Hitchcock Style (£32), which explores the great director’s use of fashion, as well as The Light of London (£50), a photobook of black and white images taken in the capital.

On the partnership, Basmajian said: “Prosper Assouline’s enthusiasm for exquisite books is truly infectious and we are looking forward to presenting these luxury titles at No.1 Savile Row. Personal favourites of mine include the books on the Colombe d’Or and artists such as Rene Gruau but what all these books have in common is their complete dedication to excellence; a quality synonymous with Savile Row and especially with us at Gieves & Hawkes.”

Books bought in the store can be gift-wrapped in Gieves & Hawkes monogrammed paper, upgrading your usual stocking fillers (to yourself or otherwise). Beats a Huey Lewis and the News album, anyway.

The Gieves & Hawkes x Assouline pop up bookshop is open now and will run until December 31. Prices range from £16 up to £550 and the books are presented alongside other Gieves & Hawkes gift items.
