Who: Pharrell
Where: Lorraine Schwartz ‘The Eye Bangles’ Launch, LA
After the debacle that was ‘Blurred Lines’, Pharrell is all about the straight and narrow. Proving that pinstripes – a clever way to elongate a slighter frame – are just as comfortable in off-duty territory as they are on a suit, the singer put them to work on this duster-style coat at a launch event in LA.
Who: Martin Freeman
Where: Into Film Awards, London
Hobbiton’s biggest export isn’t all shaggy hair and tatty neck scarves. In fact, Martin Freeman cuts a much cleaner shape away from Middle-Earth, melding workwear classics like the chore jacket with more modern staples like high-top sneakers. Even Gandalf would let this one pass.
Who: Nick Jonas
Where: Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle Screening, Tokyo
Granted, Nick Jonas probably employs a squad of professionals to make him look good. But that doesn’t mean you need a VIP team to do the same. A padded jacket that still fits well in all the right places is an easy way to build bulk up-top, regardless of how many gym hours you’ve clocked.
Who: Dave Franco
Where: 6 Balloons Premiere, SXSW Festival
Funnyman Dave Franco has taken a more serious role with his latest flick, 6 Balloons, and it looks like his wardrobe is going along for the ride. By slotting a polo shirt under a simple two-button suit, the 32-year-old pulled together an effortless business-casual look we can all steal for Monday morning. Factor in an additional pop of colour from a pocket square, and there’s no laughing stock here.
Who: Oliver Cheshire
Where: London
His backdrop might say barrow boy, but his outfit is definite boy wonder material. A mix of tailoring and sportswear, leading male model Oliver Cheshire not only gave the world a lesson in high-low dressing, but also showed how to pull off the chunky trainer trend. It’s probably the only time you’ll see genuine
Who: Karamo Brown
Where: Love, Simon Premiere, Los Angeles
Karamo Brown’s Queer Eye ‘culture advice’ is patchy at best: go boxing, be confident, invite your ex-wife over for a meal (sorry, what?). Less puzzling, however, is his style. The Real World graduate went for a statement jacket at the premiere of Love, Simon, but toned it down with monochrome pieces elsewhere. Now that’s advice to follow.
Who: Joey Pollari
Where: Love, Simon Premiere, Los Angeles
Sound the former-Disney-star-turned-style-icon klaxon. Joey Pollari, a man best known for 2009’s Skyrunners, has ditched the kids’ clobber for a more grown-up look. Simply repeat with a neatly-cut two-piece and a louche long-sleeved T-shirt, and you too will be on the Hollywood ascent (or at least look like you are, anyway).
Who: Scott Evans
Where: iHeart Radio Music Awards, Los Angeles
Splintered tailoring needn’t splinter your look. Aside from being an excellent way to break up a bigger frame, mixing and matching separates also offers up the chance to make a statement, as Access Hollywood correspondent Scott Evans did with this checked double-breasted blazer.
Who: Liam Payne
Where: Commonwealth Day Observance Service, London
Of all the men we had down as being able to successfully rejig the suit, we can’t say any were a former boybander. Yet that’s exactly what Liam Payne did, opting for a two-tone shawl lapel to move beyond the standard – all without trying too hard. Honestly, we’re just as surprised as you are.
