When I get round to changing the Post of the Month, you will see that we are going to try and include some new features each month on FashionBeans.com. One of these is basically going to showcase a new designer each week. The idea is that by showing you new designers you may not of heard about, or those you have not seen items from before, then we will enlighten you and you will expand your fashion knowledge and hopefully wardrobe. The only way to expand your personal style and KNOW what your personal taste is, is by looking at items you might not normally consider. You can pick out anything from items you haven’t seen before, whether it’s the cut you like, colours, patterns or overall style.

So expand your horizons and take a look at our first feature… RAF Simons Clothing.

RAF Simons Clothing

Belgian-born Raf Simons studied industrial design at the Antwerp Royal Academy and showed his first collection of menswear on the catwalks in 1995. He became known for his deconstructed takes on punk and goth and was part of the wave of avant-garde Belgian designers touting high-concept clothes with precision cuts. Simons delivered his youthful line RAF by Raf Simons in Summer 2006 and his first women’s collection in Winter 2006. Initially, he worked with Walter Van Beirendonck in Paris, where he was exposed to the work of Martin Margiela and Jean-Paul Gaultier.

His collections are strongly influenced by youth culture albeit in an indirect way. He often combines strongly cut classic menswear with baggy streetwear-influenced items. Simons’ style has been described as highly influential. He is cited as being one of the most important innovators in contemporary menswear by the international press. Since his label has been growing more and more successful, he feels restricted and confined by the business side of fashion. In order to re-energise his reason to work, he announced he will quit from fashion and take time to consider new directions.

Luckily for you RAF Simons Clothing is still going strong and producing great new collections each season and each year. The latest stuff to be released to the public is particulary great and really appeals across a wide range of fashion tastes. 1) An iconic Fred Perry polo shirt with a Raf Simons twist. In black with a maroon laurel, the body is darted for a slim fit, sleeves and body are longer than the standard polo and collar is unembellished. The placket buttons with three ‘Fred Perry’ embossed buttons. We love this because it is the brain child of two brilliant and iconic designers but still manages to keep a simple and traditional look. We love the larger badge and how smart it is and the feel and overall quality of the shirt is absolutely brilliant. This is an item every fashionable man should have in their wardrobe to dress up or down.

2) Incredible ‘all in one ‘ jacket from a collection which made a statement about extreme tailoring. Collarless and with cut out detailing on the lapel, the jacket is fully lined and has a long vent at the back so it doesn’t restrict the wearer.

Fabric is a mod-ish monochrome linen and cotton mix, the jacket needs dry cleaning only. I don’t even think we need to explain why we love this… Just look at it! So stylish and was one of THE hits when they previewed the Spring Summer collection on the catwalks last year. Needless to say I have one of these gorgeous jackets and it just works so well on its own with jeans or for mixing separates together (other suit items) which is a big fashion trend this year.

3) Amazing white sleeveless jersey top with a large fishnet overlay. Collar and placket are unembellished cotton knit and the shirt fastens with three Fred Perry embossed buttons. The laurel is mid-blue and seen through the netted overlay.

Another collaboration but again another great piece that just works. Love the colour and composition of the fabric and the overall cut has that traditional Fred Perry look to it. Sleeveless means it will be great for Spring and Summer with shorts or jeans so why not pick one up and get ready for the nice weather (fingers crossed!).

4) This is Raf Simons’ ‘All Star’ style Astronaut Mix monochrome boot in top quality leather with an extendible Velcro ankle strap that can be worn ‘hi-top’ style over the foot or bent back behind the ankle.

I love boots. I had to get that out the way as this might seem a little biased. You see hundreds of people from all walks of life and fashion tastes wearing Converse All Stars these days. They are popular because they are a bit different from the boring old Nikes or Adidas you see a lot of people wearing. These RAF Simons Boots take it to the next level… They are so cool and look great with any outfit and jeans or shorts. If you don’t own a pair of casual boots I suggest you invest because they will definitely set off your usual outfits and add some flair to your style.

We hope you enjoyed this preview, if you have any particular designers you would like to see featured just drop it in the comments below.
