I have begun to adopt a very annoying habit. It wastes valuable time, causes almost unbearable frustration and puts me in a bad mood before they day has even started. I’m sure I’m not alone when it comes to the trait of staring into the wardrobe; not knowing what to wear. On Tuesday I caught myself at it again.
A few friends and I had decided to go into good old London town for some dinner and drinks but I hadn’t the foggiest what to don for such an occasion. I wanted smart-casual but nothing was jumping out at me.
Reluctantly, I pulled a light blue Oxford shirt off the railing, partnered it with some dark blue jeans and grabbed my navy twill blazer. It looked half decent after I’d strapped on a watch and stuffed a handkerchief into the breast pocket, but it still felt like it was missing something. Something that would pull the whole look together.
After some thought, I tried a tie and even though it felt right, it looked wrong. I then realised it was because I was wearing the wrong kind of tie! I was in dire need of a knitted tie. On my way into town I stopped off at Next on Oxford Street. I had rung up just before leaving the house to make sure they had what I wanted in stock and when I got to the till the manager told me that they had been flying out the door and I was about to buy the last one.
Whilst the tie is made from polyester rather than silk, it is at the bargain price of £10 – you cannot go wrong! It looked great with the outfit and was definitely the missing piece to the puzzle. Importantly, I felt it added another layer to the look and was not just another accessory.
With that comment gentleman, I recommend that you consider the humble, understated yet surprisingly appropriate knitted tie next time you are stumped. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
