John Varvatos Limited Edition Jimi Hendrix-Inspired Collection
Rock God Jimi Hendrix has been immortalised by John Varvatos in a new collection. The designer’s limited edition line, due spring 2014, comprises both men’s apparel and accessories inspired by the late musician’s style.
During an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Varvatos admitted he had not considered a line based on the American guitarist’s look, despite profiling several rock stars in his work, until Hendrix’s family contacted him.
The designer confirmed that compiling and editing his recent coffee table book John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion influenced the overall appearance of the Hendrix collection.
“I was exploring the black and white images of Jimi Hendrix by notable British portrait photographer Gered Mankowitz,” said the 47-year-old in an interview with the Houston Chronicle.
“Jimi was a visionary rocker whose influence reaches beyond music, defining the art of individual style. Using this inspiration, I created a contemporary, non-nostalgic mix that is tactile and precious, in a non-precious kind of way,” he added.
Now available to be viewed online, the collection sticks with a black and white colour palette. Silk poet shirts and fitted pants influenced, but not directly worn, by Hendrix characterise much of the attire. Embroidery, floral prints and shoulder pads add variation to the two-tone combination.
For accessories, Vaquetta leather boots feature a heel and lace-up front. The Mojo Pouch Belt in leather gives an alternative to a clutch or messenger bag.
Each item consists of 24 to 340 pieces, all individually numbered, with prices ranging between $298 (£182) and $1,698 (£1,039). Artwork is also available – images of Hendrix by the likes of Baron Wolman and Larry Hulst sell for up to $1,700 (£1,040) online.
John Varvatos, who is former head of design at both Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, is the two-time winner of the Menswear Designer of the Year award in the US.
While the Jimi Hendrix collection won’t be available until spring, items can be pre-ordered today.
