Introduction
It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that the military has been the single biggest influence on fashion of (at least) the last 10 years.
On the menswear side of things, we’ve had recent trends involving field jackets, camouflage and military style boots while wardrobe staples and timeless classics like the peacoat, parka and trench coat are all born out of the military. Not to mention double-breasted, which is currently having a renaissance, has its roots firmly in naval history.
This season military is as big as ever, forming the backbone of some of the major trends that are set to enjoy their moment in the spotlight. One such trend is the use of olive as a key colour for this autumn/winter period.
Key Colour: Olive
Olive appears as a muddy shade of green but is actually a darker hue of yellow. Olive with a greener tone is referred to as olive drab and was the official colour of the US military uniform during World War Two. Olive drab is still used today in the US military, although more for accessories as it has been forgone on the uniform for the more practical camouflage.
These military connotations are no doubt a large reason why olive is currently trending in the fashion world for AW12. In fact, the vast majority of Kris Van Assche’s AW12 collection, ‘A Solider on My Own’, for Dior Homme (see below) featured this greener shade of olive as the standout colour:

While colour and prints are most definitely on the rise, earthy, neutral tones form the foundation of our wardrobes – black, grey, navy and white being the particular favourites.
Olive is about as earthy and muted as colours come and serves as a great option when constructing a classic look. It sits excellently alongside the aforementioned stable colours, often bringing some diversity to them with its greenish and yellow tones. Like the other neutrals that are revered so much, it is also able to anchor the splashes of colour that have proved so popular over recent years. I would recommend steering clear of brights however – keep the hues of colour you’re working with on a more natural palette rather than luminous.
Key Consideration: Outerwear

With their military derivations, olive is very often the colour of choice for the cold weather-conquering parka. An olive parka is simple, practical and stylish and will sit comfortably over any outfit. Sometimes keeping it simple and traditional is the best option [as pointed out by Matt last week].
Other outerwear styles in olive are also worth serious consideration. Those rakish double-breasted coats, which take an outfit from zero to hero, look especially commanding in olive green. The earthy colour subtly separates it from the traditional neutral tones, and a good olive coat has more of an air of authority about it than a drabber grey equivalent.
Along with military, texture and heritage are still very much at the forefront of menswear this season. Nothing says heritage more than a quilted or waxed jacket, and opting for an olive tone gives both styles an authenticity that is perfect when trying to bring a touch of the countryside into your contemporary urban looks.

How To Wear: Olive
Men’s Olive Lookbook

Look One: Knitwear
Work olive into your wardrobe through knitwear this autumn/winter. Knitwear in olive tones are superb for layering, as they are highly unlikely to clash with the other colours you’ve incorporated into your outfit.
A burgundy shirt under the olive crew neck adds a small burst of colour that compliments the green tones while the stable navy chinos work well with both the burgundy shirt and earthy sweater. Finish off the look with some weather appropriate, versatile brown shoes:
- Peter Werth Plum Slim Shirt

- Ymc Merino Wool And Cashmere-blend Sweater

- Dockers Navy Stretch Cotton D0 Slim Chinos

Look Two: Trousers
Olive chinos are a great alternative to the navy and khaki coloured ones that have proved so dominant since the dramatic increase in popularity of the style.
Alongside a monochromatic top half combination of a clean white shirt and black outerwear, these chinos form a formidable partnership with the military inspired peacoat, with the whole outfit anchored by the casual grey chukka boots:
- Essential Cotton Rich Shirt In White

- Maison Martin Margiela Slim-fit Wool-blend Peacoat

- Fred Perry Chino

- Folk Armstrong Shoes Light Grey

Look Three: Shirt
Diversify your shirt game with an earthy olive toned shirt. A great way to add something different to your smart-casual looks, especially when paired alongside a neutral coloured blazer and dark jeans.
Brogues add a smarter edge to this look but desert boots or even some adult-appropriate trainers would slide the look more to the casual side of the scale:
- Lanvin Contrast Collar Overdyed Shirt 128544

- Reiss Clinton Lightweight Patch Pkt Blazer Deer

- Acne Navy Max New Raw Slim Jeans

- Topman Benjamin Brogues

Key Pieces In Olive

Loving this. Been meaning to get hold of some olive chinos for a while.
It’s a great way to keep it muted and classic, while introducing something a bit different. Am now considering a thick olive knit.
A very welcome addition.
Anyone know the blouson jacket from the second row of runway photos?

Looks Like Burberry
What you haven’t said is that it only works on pale/v.dark skin, don’t wear if you have olive skin.
I’ve been looking for some olive jeans for months. I don’t bother with chinos they’re not hardy enough (and also I’m a very messy eater – always spilling stuff on my trousers. Chinos show up stains so badly they should use them instead of kids’ football kits on washing powder adverts). Anyway if someone could point me the direction of some well-made olive jeans i’d be grateful.
River island, i dont normally buy bits from there but theres a really nice pair of olive jeans, there skinny jeans, actually wearing them now, have a look!
