Common Sons Knitwear: SS12 Collection
Love for home grown. Founded in 2011, Common Sons knitwear is entirely sourced and made in the UK; the yarn is from Leicestershire, the buttons from Nottinghamshire and the label’s factory is located in the Black Country.
The label showcases a proud British fashion heritage; a patriotic celebration of Anglican design, history and manufacturing, the garments blend vintage-style design with modern finishes.
The luxurious yarns, knits and cuts of each knit are further enhanced by an acute attention to detail. As the label puts it: “When we create our designs, we borrow a little from your granddad and mix it with off beat colours, contemporary details and modern cuts to make comfortable and distinctive knits.”
The up-and-coming label is currently focused on creating luxe menswear pieces – having released it’s inaugural AW11 collection followed by the current SS12 range.
I came across Common Sons only a few weeks ago when previewing the current SS12 collection. On first feel, the yarns are woven to a sturdy yet soft finish and the colour palate is invigorating – mixing heritage hues with more contemporary lighter washes.
Common Sons collections are split into two ranges; ‘Slim’ and ‘Classic’ fit. The ‘Classic’ style is defined by its relaxed fit with long shoulder-to-shoulder measurements. You can team this range with slim, fitted bottoms to cut a modern silhouette.
The ‘Slim’ fit style is categorised by its reminiscence of the mariner jumper used by servicemen in the Navy during World War two. The length of each piece has been reduced slightly from the original, which creates a slimmer profile to work with.
The last thing (and probably the most important) that really made the label grab my attention was it’s price tag. Being a home grown and made product, you would expect the knits to carry a higher price tag – you would be mistaken. Each jumper released from the SS12 collection so far retails at around £65, making this a luxe, yet affordable range.
